Efficient Sequential Decision-Making Algorithms for Container Inspection Operations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Following work of Stroud and Saeger (Proceedings of ISI, Springer Verlag, New York, 2006) and Anand et al. (Proceedings of Computer, Communication and Control Technologies, 2003), we formulate a port of entry inspection sequencing task as a problem of finding an optimal binary decision tree for an appropriate Boolean decision function. We report on new algorithms for finding such optimal trees that are more efficient computationally than those presented by Stroud and Saeger and Anand et al. We achieve these efficiencies through a combination of specific numerical methods for finding optimal thresholds for sensor functions and two novel binary decision tree search algorithms that operate on a space of potentially acceptable binary decision trees. The improvements enable us to analyze substantially larger applications than was previously possible. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Naval Research Logistics 58: 637–654, 2011

Stop Nuclear Smuggling Through Efficient Container Inspection
Since 2003, the U.S. government has spent $850 million on the Megaport Initiative which aims at stopping the nuclear smuggling in international container shipping through advanced inspection facilities including Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) and Mobile Radiation Detection and Identification System (MRDIS). Unfortunately, it remains a significant challenge to efficiently inspect more than 11.7 ...
متن کاملCost Function Modelling for Semi-automated SC, RTG and Automated and Semi-automated RMG Container Yard Operating Systems
This study analyses the concept of cost functions for semi-automated Straddle Carrier (SC), Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and automated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) container yard operating cranes. It develops a generic cost based model for a pair-wise comparison, analysis and evaluation of economic efficiency and effectiveness of container yard equipment to be used for decision-making by terminal pla...
متن کاملOptimization of Re-handling and Load/Unload Operations in Small Container Terminal Operated by Reachstackers
In this paper efficient in time methods for support decision-making processes in small container terminal operated by reachstackers are proposed. Two main problems are considered: first, minimization the number of loading/unloading operations between container trains and bays, second, minimization the number of re-handing operations within container bays. in Gliwice, Poland to model the problem...
متن کاملComparison of AHP and FAHP for Selecting Yard Gantry Cranes in Marine Container Terminals
The time that containerships or transportation trucks spend in marine container terminals for loading and unloading their cargo is a real cost scenario which affects, not only the smooth operation of ports, but also affect the overall cost of container trade. The operators of shipping lines and container terminals are required to realize the importance of this issue and the costs associated wit...
متن کاملExperimental Analysis of Sequential Decision Making Algorithms for Port of Entry Inspection Procedures
Following work of Stroud and Saeger, we investigate the formulation of the port of entry inspection algorithm problem as a problem of finding an optimal binary decision tree for an appropriate Boolean decision function. We report on an experimental analysis of the robustness of the conclusions of the Stroud-Saeger analysis and show that the optimal inspection strategy is remarkably insensitive ...
